Biography

Herbst & Högman is the collaborative practice of Stockholm-based artists Alice Herbst and Chris Högman. Together, they merge distinct approaches into a shared visual language that stages ordinary figures within theatrical, constructed worlds. Their process combines Herbst’s scenographic constructions with Högman’s intuitive painterly improvisation, producing works that balance empathy, illusion, and narrative ambiguity.

Alice Herbst (b. 1993, Stockholm) is a figurative painter whose practice often begins with handmade cardboard and paper props arranged into stage-like scenes. She studied at the Stockholm School of Art and Gerlesborg School of Fine Art, and her work has been exhibited internationally, including a collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar Germany and Max Mara, with works entering the Collezione Maramotti.

Chris Högman (b. 1995, Stockholm) is a painter whose work revolves around the act of painting itself, where simplification, distortion, and revision shape both figure and narrative. He trained in the classical tradition at the Swedish Academy of Realist Art before graduating from the Gerlesborg School of Fine Art in 2017. Each painting develops like spoken narrative: layers are added, erased, and left to stand as records of time. Expressions surface through rhythm and brushweight, held between clarity and collapse. His work is collected in Europe and the United States, reflecting an approach to figuration that moves between the archetypal and the personal, the constructed and the raw.

“We see the act of staging these figures as an exercise in empathy. It’s about noticing someone you pass by, imagining their world, and creating a space where viewers can do the same.” — Chris Högman
