Gallery Sonder is pleased to present Awakening, the inaugural solo exhibition in the United States by Mexico City born artist Moncho. On view from May 15 through June 16, the exhibition brings together two parallel bodies of work that explore inner consciousness in a way that mirrors the hidden life of the natural world.

Rooted in spiritual inquiry, Moncho approaches painting as meditation and mapping, layering color, pattern, and rhythm to create works that feel both organic and system-based. Influenced by indigenous textile traditions, psychedelic visual language, and digital aesthetics, his compositions evoke shifting fields of energy that propose a collective consciousness as their underlying structure. 

In Awakening, Moncho’s methodology is explored through two interrelated series, ABC and XYZ, which perform as distinct yet responsive modes of metamorphosis through painting. ABC is structured and deliberate, built from geometric forms that suggest processes of growth and reproduction. Cells divide, forms swell, and structures expand, echoing cycles of formation found in both natural and digital arrangements. Red underpainting often anchors the compositions, emerging through dense weavings of pattern and color, creating a sense of interior or corporeal presence beneath. In contrast, XYZ feels immediate, fluid, and spacious. These paintings operate through layered gestures and rapid shifts of mark-making and form, where imagery appears and dissolves in quick succession. The works carry a sense of volatility and openness, relying on improvisation as opposed to pattern. 

Moncho (b. 1976, Mexico City) developed an early passion for painting that eventually led him to study Fine Arts at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. He also pursued studies in communications at Universidad Iberoamericana, an influence that continues to inform the symbolic and communicative dimensions of his work.

Moncho’s practice explores the threshold between abstraction and subconscious figuration, using painting as a vehicle for reflection, perception, and personal transformation. His compositions often merge geometric structures with fluid organic forms, creating visual environments that oscillate between order and spontaneity. Through layered color, repeating patterns, and intuitive gestures, his works evoke vibrational fields of energy—suggesting the interconnectedness of internal consciousness and the wider universe.

His works draw subtle references from indigenous textile traditions, psychedelic visual language, and contemporary digital aesthetics, resulting in compositions that feel simultaneously organic and algorithmic. The dialogue between precision and improvisation becomes central to the viewing experience, inviting audiences to move beyond purely visual interpretation toward emotional and intuitive engagement.

Moncho’s paintings function as portals—spaces where geometry and fluidity, chaos and harmony, coexist. By resisting fixed interpretation, the work reflects the evolving nature of perception itself, encouraging viewers to contemplate the rhythms of time, memory, and consciousness.

His work has been exhibited internationally across Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and Mexico, and has appeared in publications including Canadian Art Magazine, Celeste, Código, Sunday Magazine, and Rosebud Publication. He has participated in art fairs such as Toronto Art Fair and Zona Maco, and has exhibited with galleries including Terreno Baldío, Oscar Román, ACSA, Access Gallery, Helen Pitt Gallery, Onepointsix Gallery, Grunt Gallery, 111 Taller Público, and Taller 30.

Notable exhibitions include Blessings of Peace and Magnificence for Mexico at Casa Pineda Covalín and Glimpsing Eternity at Imagine Gallery. His work has also been included in a special collection created in collaboration with the Swiss watch brand Swatch.
